He has a tailor, a barber, a bootmaker, and firm opinions about all three. Whatever he wanted this year, he bought in March.
This is the particular difficulty with men who are good at acquiring things. Not that they are hard to please, but that they have already pleased themselves. There is nothing left to give him that he could not have got faster, in his own size, in his own taste.
Except one thing.
A man does not commission a monument to his own life. It is not in him to do it. It requires someone else to decide that his life is worth an object.

A piece takes six to twelve weeks from the first drawing to the hallmark. To have it under a tree on the twenty-fifth of December, it must begin by Friday 25 September.

A signet is not jewellery in the way a bracelet is jewellery. It is closer to a watch or a fountain pen: an object with a function, a history, and a reason for existing. For four hundred years the signet has been the exception to English reticence about ornament on men, because it was never ornament. It was identity, and it was used to seal things.
That is the qualification, not the obstacle.
Everything he is impossible to buy is something he could buy himself. A commission is the only category where his money and his taste cannot arrive first, because the object does not exist until you decide that it should.

Nothing is made until you have approved the drawing, the stone and the finish. Our design director works with you through sketch and render, and no gold is cut until you say so.

It is a conversation, not an examination. You arrive with a name, a date, a family crest, a campaign he is obsessed with, or simply a sense of the man. We do the rest.
Every enamelled surface begins on a rose-engine lathe of a kind that has not been manufactured in over a century. The machine is turned by hand. It cuts a pattern into the gold at a depth measured in hundredths of a millimetre.
It cannot be paused. It cannot be corrected. A single face takes hours, and one slip means beginning again in new gold.
There are two houses in the world still applying authentic guilloché grand feu enamel to men's pieces at this standard. The other is Fabergé.
Powdered glass is laid into the engraving and fired at around 800 °C. Then fired again. And again, up to 10 times and every firing risks losing everything beneath it.
What you are looking at is not paint, lacquer or resin. It is glass. It cannot fade, and it will look exactly as it does now in three hundred years.
Our enamelling is carried out by one of the few remaining masters of the technique, whose work has been commissioned by Fabergé.
Every Alexandria piece goes to the London Assay Office of The Goldsmiths' Company, which has tested and marked British precious metal since 1327.
The leopard's head is not decoration. It is a legal guarantee of fineness, independently assayed, and it is the oldest form of consumer protection in the world. It means that what we have told you about the gold is true, and that a stranger with a loupe can confirm it in four hundred years.
Each is made to order in his size. Any element can be changed: the stone, the enamel colour, the metal, the engraving inside the shank.
Commissions begin at $9,500. A fully bespoke piece, designed from nothing, typically falls between $20,000 and $35,000.
