Alexander the Great

The portrait at the heart of this ring is drawn from an authentic Greek drachm struck over 2,200 years ago — one of the earliest depictions of Alexander to survive antiquity. He wears the scalp of the Nemean lion, the mark of Heracles, from whom he claimed descent.

Here, his likeness is rendered in white agate by a master hardstone carver, framed by forty-eight natural emeralds set within an intricate crest of solid 18ct gold.

The shoulders of the ring each bear their own carving: Zeus enthroned, taken from the reverse of the same drachm, and Bucephalus, Alexander's legendary warhorse, drawn from a coin struck by Seleucus I Nicator — the general who inherited the eastern reaches of his empire.

The north face of the setting is inscribed "The Great." The south bears "Alexander" in Greek.
